My Sionic story

Catalyst Development Limited | Consulting opportunities | Dan Sharp

Dan Sharp, Director at Sionic

“I have a unique take on a consultant’s career. I worked as a chartered accountant, fund accountant and held operational change roles before I even considered being a consultant. And, significantly, I have spent time away from work, which allowed me to work out what I was good at and, more importantly, what I enjoyed doing.

“A consultant’s career is characterised by change. Projects are hugely varied and can last from a few days to 18 months. I’m often located at a client’s offices and I work from project to project. In six years, I’ve progressed to managing consultant, so I guess I thrive in these circumstances. But if you like to know what you’ll be doing every six months, or if being in unfamiliar territory makes you feel uncomfortable, then so will a career as a consultant.

“Exposure to experience has been fundamental to my progress. My second job saw me onsite and involved in a very interesting but extremely challenging project. Luckily, one of our founding directors was also involved. Working at close quarters with somebody of his experience clearly rubbed off on me. But that’s our way. Everybody is willing to help everybody else.

“Our flat structure has also helped me progress, and there’s no doubt I’ve benefited from being visible to senior staff. But with recognition comes responsibility. I’m expected to deliver for our clients and for my colleagues. But we have a supportive culture because there’s an understanding that to be successful everybody needs to work successfully.”
